The Caribbean
My introduction to the "idea" of the Caribbean was from a loquacious West Indian. Ah the tales he could tell! And it was
he who introduced me to reggae. (See scene 5 in Sweet Compulsions for my first reaction to the infectious music.) In fact, Joseph planned for us to see Bob Marley but the legendary Jamaican passed shortly before the concert.

When I found my way to Jamaica I was entranced by everything from the view off my hotel deck to climbing a 600-foot waterfall to reggae in the streets and beautiful proud black people.

Ocho Rios has the best live music advertising ...

Magnificent view from the deck of my Silvah Seas hotel room.

This old Rasta was present every day in One Love Park in Ocho Rios, Jamaica. And I also got to the Marley Museum in Kingston after a day-long bus trip up and over the Blue Mountains. We saw his bedroom, even stared at the holes made by bullets that missed him in his kitchen.

And the strangest experience in Ocho Rios was being yelled at by a Rasta in prayer for taking the picture below. Only time in my life I mumbled, "Peace," and quickly backed out of the alley
I'd strolled into.

At last I took the long-anticipated Caribbean cruise! And at a bargain as the ship was repositioning. So I flew to New York to board -- a story in itself, what with a canceled connection and the need to get to Brooklyn Piers during rush hour -- and then flew back from Puerto Rico after visits to Antigua, St. Kitts, St. Thomas and a (very rainy but memorable) weekend on my own in Old San Juan.

I stayed in El Convento, a splurgy hotel in a 350-yr-old building that back in the day housed a convent for Spanish widows.

For a time I considered the idea of retirement in PR. Ah but it's way too expensive to live in San Juan or, indeed, Ponce, the only other big city. I don't do boondox and besides the island is only 35 miles wide and 95 miles long.
